Learner’s Permits and Auto Insurance

The requirements for teen drivers in Florida with a learner’s permit are easy, allowing the teen to drive responsibly and safely. The state does not require parents or guardians to purchase a separate policy, but the state does require that the teen is added to the parents’ or guardians’ current auto insurance policy.

It is also important that your insurance company is immediately notified that your teen will have access to driving privileges. If your insurance company is not notified and the teen is involved in an accident, you will be held legally responsible for damages. Failure to notify your insurance company can also mean any claims made by you may be denied. 

There is the possibility your premiums may increase, but this does not usually occur. A learner’s permit is for teens aged 15 years old. The next licensing level is for an intermediate license for teens ages 16 to 17. This license also requires that the teen is added to the current auto policy.  A State of Florida Class E license is for teens ages 18 and over. When this license is assigned, the teen must be placed on a guardian or a parents’ auto policy, or they can purchase their own auto insurance.
